Our Story

2025

In the heart of Carnlough village, a forgotten building has been given new life. The old Parochial Hall – once silent – now hums again with pride, craftsmanship, and the unmistakable aroma of whiskey maturing in old oak casks.

1747

Our Story begins with Ann Murray, a spirited woman from Waterfoot, born in 1747, whose ingenuity and defiance became legend throughout the Glens of Antrim.

Ann ‘Nanny’ Murray lived as a hermit in a nearby cave. She was famous for her poteen – which she gave away to avoid paying duty, but charged for water to accompany it…

Ann often made the short journey along the coast to Carnlough, where many loyal and thirsty customers awaited her.

1800s

In an age when such a crime could mean banishment to Australia, Ann escaped punishment thanks to Lord Antrim, who often intervened on her behalf — and, it’s said, enjoyed her whiskey himself.

1847

Ann lived to be 100 years old, passing away in 1847 — just one year before the Harbourview Hotel opened its doors under the ownership of the Marchioness of Londonderry.

Today

Ann’s legacy lives on through Carnlough Irish Whiskey – a celebration of her courage, craft, and the enduring spirit of the Glens.

Born in Waterfoot. Beloved in Carnlough. Remembered in every dram.
